[07/29/2010] 3 Chandler, AZ Officers shot, [1KILLED, 2CRITICAL]
PHOENIX - Three Chandler Police officers have been shot in south Phoenix and one has died, during an undercover drug bust gone bad.
It happened just before 7 p.m. The officers were conducting an undercover marijuana sale at the suspects' residence at 24th Ave and Baseline, when something went horribly wrong. The suspected drug dealers allegedly opened fire on the undercover officers, and a shootout ensued.
The officers were taken to St. Joseph's Hospital -- one has since died and the remaining two are in critical and stable conditions, respectively.
Two suspects were apparently killed in the gunfire exchange, two were hospitalized with gunshot wounds, and two are in custody. The suspects that survive will be arrested once they are released from the hospital.
A Phoenix Police Drug Task Force was nearby during the undercover drug deal for backup, and they made it to the scene almost immediately.
Phoenix Police have blocked off the area, set up a command center and the investigation is ongoing.
Police say it is not unusual for a team of police officers to work independently in another jurisdiction.
"When something like this happens, it's like a family member that we lost," says Phoenix Police Sgt. Steve Martos.
No names have been released.
