Howdy,

I'm going to a department that strongly recommends .45s. More than half the officers carry 1911s of one brand or another.

So, I need to get a 1911 in .45. The problem is, I've only got $750 I can spend. I can't look at 1911s that are "only $50 more..." than my budget.

Any recommendations?

I'm not an Officer but I am knowledgeable in the handgun area.. just because half the guys in the department have 1911's doesn't mean you need to get one.

There's a new gun out called the "XDM 45" by Springfield.. I would suggest looking into it. Can be found for a little under your going price.

Agreed. Why limit yourself to a 1911 if you don't have to. Find a weapon that you like that complies with department policy.

Let me say this...

The Sheriff STRONGLY recommends I carry a 1911, and it's in my best interest to get one.

They can be found for $750 or less. Just depends on how many bells and whistles you want on it.

Don't be afraid to look out for a solid used one. 1911's aren't cheap.

Might check into an STI. They have the Spartan and Trojan that could be in your price range. You can buy direct from the manufacturer with an LE discount, or check out Dawson Precision's website. They buy direct from STI and fine tune them to perfection. I know ALOT of guys that carry them.

The Springfield "Range Officer" goes for about $800. I know that's that extra $50 you don't want to spend, but check into it. The gun shop I go to usually gives me a discount because:

A.) I'm a cop and have alot of friends who buy guns.
B.) I've bought several guns from the guy.

See what he'll extend you in the likes of courtesy.

get an XD. The 1911 for duty will most likely cost you more than you are willing to spend. My daily carry is an XD45.

I have carried my 1911 for the last year and Im going to change. I LOVE 1911s and never thought I would carry anything else on duty...but times change.
I really want something that has more rounds.

IF you are looking for cheap 1911s you might keep an ear to the ground on gunbroker. Usually you can find good deals every now and again....especially if the starting bid is low or $1

Did you ever get a 1911 if so what did you get and how do you like it. I carried a Kimber for several years and got along well with it.
