AUSTIN (KXAN) - A deputy said stunned onlookers had to help her subdue a man who became violent when asked to leave the bench where he had been sleeping.
It happened between the CiCi’s Pizza and Amaya’s Restaurant at the Capital Plaza shopping center Friday afternoon.
A female Travis County sheriff’s deputy said she was working as an off-duty security officer and told Michael Holloway, 43, he needed to wake up and stop sleeping on the bench at 1:42 p.m.
After resisting, the arrest affidavit said Holloway told the officer, “You have no idea who I am and what I am capable of."
Holloway allegedly yelled at the officer, "I can disarm you and kill you! You don't know who you are messing with (sic) I take Haldol."
A struggle ensued between the two when Holloway allegedly kicked the deputy in the groin area, which is when the deputy pinned Holloway against the wall. Holloway allegedly kicked her in the stomach, breaking her gun belt latch.
Still, the deputy reportedly continued to try and arrest Holloway, asking onlookers to help her so she could get her weapons.
Marcus Rodriguez works at Amaya's Taco Village and was one of the people who came to the deputy's aid.
"She was asking him to leave and when I turned my head he was wrestling her down to the ground," said Rodriguez. "I asked if I could help first and then I grabbed him and pinned him up against the wall."
After the citizens' help, authorities subdued and handcuffed Holloway, who reportedly continued to tell the deputy while he was in the police vehicle that he never forgets a face or name. He allegedly continued making threats and comments all the way to Central Booking.
"I could have put my foot on your neck when I knocked you down and took your gun and shot you, then shot all these people around here," Holloway said, according to court documents.
Apart from her broken duty belt, the deputy's pen and personal cell phone also broke.
The deputy walked away from the incident with a cut to her left arm and bruises to both her right and left arm, both legs, stomach and groin area.
Business owners say Capital Plaza has seen a growing problem with panhandlers who go in and out of stores asking customers for money.
"I think security is stretched thin," said store manager Bakari Yanci. "It is a big shopping center and you can only do so much."
Rodriguez said this is not the first altercation he has seen with a panhandler at the shopping center and he is familiar with the hired security who patrols Captial Plaza and that is why he was quick to help.
"You got to do what you got to do. I helped her because she helps us."
