It's a damn shame...

A Fort Worth police officer was gravely injured in a crash on Interstate 30 near Ederville Road on Thursday afternoon.

The officer was involved in a high-speed chase on rain-soaked roads when the crash occurred. Aerial footage from Chopper 5 showed the officer's car next to a tree partially ripped from the ground.

The officer, whose name has not been released, was transported to an area hospital with life-threatening injuries, a MedStar spokesperson told NBC DFW.

He underwent surgery for a severe head trauma, Fort Worth police said Thursday night. Police said the surgery went as planned, and the next 24 hours would be critical. Police said the officer was in stable condition.

After the crash, dispatch called off the pursuit of the motorcycle.

Terry Grisham with the Tarrant County Sheriff's Department said that his department requested assistance from the Fort Worth Police Department in stopping two motorcycles.

The motorcycles were spotted at a house where there were believed to be a large amount of drugs. With one of the motorcycles missing a license plate, officers attempted to pull the rider over but the rider refused to stop, Grisham said.

That's when the sheriff's department requested assistance from the Fort Worth police.

"We're trying to figure out how our pursuit policy got kind of twisted up," Grisham said. "We should never have been pursuing people we didn't know were in possession of drugs. We assumed, but we didn't know. We can only pursue in felony or DWI cases. These [deputies] have some explaining to do."

Fort Worth Chief of Police Jeffrey Halstead said Thursday, "One of our family members is here at the hospital, a very well-liked member of the family. Our thoughts and prayers need to be with the officer."

"Our prayers are with him. I would ask the city to pray for him and his family, as well as the Fort Worth police family. We are all hurting this evening," Fort Worth Mayor Mike Moncrief said.

ORT WORTH -- A Fort Worth patrol officer remained in "very serious condition" Sunday from head injuries he received Thursday when he lost control of his patrol car during a chase and spun into a tree. Officer Richard Lambing, 37, was still at John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth.
The crash happened about 1:50 p.m. Thursday just after Lambing took an exit ramp from East Loop 820 to eastbound Interstate 30 in Fort Worth. The crash occurred after Lambing answered a request by the Tarrant County Sheriff's Department to help pursue a motorcyclist who had left a suspected Mansfield drug house.
The motorcyclist escaped, but several hours after the wreck, authorities arrested a 36-year-old man at his north Fort Worth home.
Police are trying to determine whether he was aboard the motorcycle in the chase.

I hope the Officer recovers. As one of our Lieutenants often reminds us...

"Drive slow...it's not a mini-series!"

or, in one of my favorite sayings of his...

"Drive safe, it's a fight in the street. That means stupid people are hitting each other. Be careful."

Photos like this are a stark reminder of the hazards of the road. You have to look at that car and ask...is a POSSIBLE simple narcotics arrest worth it?
