What advice, if any, do you LEOs have when going through the hiring process?

Do Not Lie
While this may seem to be a no brainer. I have disqualified applicants for lying over little things like " have you ever used Marijuana?" They say no and then you show their freinds myspace photo with them bogarting a blunt. You lie you can't testify and are useless to your organization.

I second the BE HONEST motto. Be prepared for some failure. There are some agencies which will DQ you for things that others will not.
If they ask you if you would issue your Mother a speeding ticket and you say YES then you are a damn liar. Or you are a miserable bastard and either way they will not want to hire you.

Pay attention to detail, don't lie and treat every board like you were in the Army.

The truth is the right way to go and it will save you headaches in the long run. I have seen good officers get canned because they lied to the chief or other admin types and had they just told the truth a few days off or a slap on the wrist would have been the worst and done.
If you have a concern about whether info should be on the application, then add it and let the agency ask you about it for clarification.

I don't know about Texas, but RI is a small state. If you applied to the City of Woonsocket and then to the Town of Westerly, Westerly will know about Woonsocket.
Part of the investigation is an in house check with every RI PD. They also throw in any agency nationwide that you may have had contact with. (in my case, Fayetteville, NC because I lived at Ft. Bragg.
The more local agencies the investigating officer will speak with the investigating officer of the former town you applied to. That being said, be consistent, and don't try to pull a fast one on one town figuring you'll just go elsewhere.
Your reputation precedes you. This isn't Target you're applying to. It's a high liability, high moral code job where you will be looked into by professional investigators.
They will find the truth and even if they don't they'll find the lies. That's enough to sink you.
BTW, they asked me the mom and the speeding ticket question. I said no. The best question I was asked was the following:
You get dispatched to a business alarm at the Shell Station when it is closed. You find an open door and check the inside with another officer. The other officer takes a Snickers bar off the shelf and eats it. What do you do?
I won't tell you the "the answer" or reveal the follow up questions, but the board said my answer was good. It depends on the board though. Your mileage may vary.
Just be ready for that type of question.
