On a break last weekend I was talking with one of my academy classmates about silencers, SBRs, etc. and they said that they would like to get a silencer but had heard that owning those types of things is a red flag for LE agencies. Is this true?

Not from what one guy in my class had he worked for the CIA for 10 years before he came to the academy this guy had just about every thing from 50 cals to machine guns.
He left the CIA because his wife wanted to move closer to family took a $110K pay cut to be a LEO!

Well to be fair having work experience with the CIA trumps alot of things.
As far as it being a hindrance to getting hired I suppose you would have to look at the total package. If your "total package" screams "insane" then yes, it's a hindrance.
If I was hiring I wouldn't specifically exclude someone for having class III weapons but I would want to know why they have them. That being said, anything can help you get hired and anything can hurt you. It all depends on the eye of the beholder.
