Hello all.

I just finished the academy and I am currently looking for a job.
I was wondering if anyone was on a department that desperately needs people. I used tml.org but have not heard back from any of the departments posted yet.

Any help would be amazing.

Are you looking in a particular location or is the whole state open for you?

The whole state is open. My lease runs out the 14th of July...but I am willing to go anywhere in the state of Texas.

Thank you very much. I am new to the state as on January. But I finished the academy and all that good jazz. Now all I need is a job.

TML has like 10 pages of postings - NOTHING is biting? Damn. Have you thought about getting on as a part time or reserve officer somewhere? A lot of agencies promote (hire) from their pool of reserves and part timers.

We have some vacancies in our Beaumont Office. The job posting just closed and interviews are next week, but we have had a hard time finding good qualified applicants that are willing to go to Beaumont, so it will probably be reposted if we can't fill it off this hiring board. We currently have 3 vacancies there, and may have 4 coming up due to promotions...

All those major cities and none are hiring? Austin, Houston, Dallas, Fort Worth etc., etc.?

Huh...There has to be something TX wide...look harder.

I have applied to lots of places, they just don't seem to want to call me back even after I call and check on my apps. And as for Houston etc, I don't have enough college hours to meet their requirements.

Well then. What college are you currently enrolled in?

The only college hours I have were from the Academy, however, I plan on enrolling in Blinn or SH when I can find a job to help pay the bills.

I'm going to throw something out there; with no offense intended to anyone.

Why don't you look around; find the agency, or 2 or 3, that you want to work for; set that as your goal? And work towards that particular goal.

I know, from doing backgrounds, that 1 of the things we look at is where/how many places an apllicant has applied. Is there a reason they aren't getting hired by any of the dozen other places they applied or are they just a "badge for hire"? Are they just looking for a job anywhere they can get hired? If they have a history jumping from 1 agency to another, we look at why. (These guys often move on to greener pastures quickly after we've invested $ in training.) I've had applicants who obviously made moves to better themselves, and some who just moved on to the 1st place that offered more money (loyalty?).

Yes, we hire plenty of young, fresh out of school applicants. But we also look at thier maturaty and decision making. I even encouraged my own son to move out of the house, obtain some small loans he could pay off and to not only meet the minimum education requirement, but complete his degree.

This helped him show despite being young (still 20 when he started academy) he was mature, responsible, and didn't just do the bare minimum. It worked for him and I'm proud to say it looks like it is evidenced in his work since graduation. I still claim him.

I applied for multiple agencies and they all took forever to get back with me. The gubment wheels turn slow sometimes. Agencies took up to 2 years last time to call me. I got on with my current agency on a whim. Right before they start their academy they got a few more slots so they called me. I was not scheduled to go for about 9 months after.
While you are waiting, get some school and keep working.
