As of recently, I am officially over the 10 year mark of department service completed.
I actually have 8 years but there is a 2 year military buyback option we get so I paid a crapload of money for my 2 years back (the max they will let us buy).
Our retirement is 23 of service minimum years so I am eligible to retire in 2023 now!
Yahoooooo.

We're vested at 20....I remember it felt good to get there...if they really piss you off you can leave w/o much pain. I got 26 now & I'm harder headed than most of "them" so I'm stayin another 4 years minimum; that puts me at 30. Our system maxes out there. I've already warned them after that I'll be there as long as it's still fun & they don't yank my chain. Oh, & then only when I aint using up the sick/vacation I've earned:nana:
FEET, you remember as a rookie looking at those old heads, like me, & wondering why they were still doing it? You are rapidly becomeing one; just watch how the young uns look at you; feels good don't it?
Congrats:salute:

Good job on keeping your sanity for 26 years Hoss.
I plan on staying until that switch flips in my head and I know it is time to go. I will save up as much of my sick and vacation to cash that bad boy in for the big check! The last few years I am in I will work my ass off to get the next pay grade for retirement.
I always looked at the old timers on patrol and asked myself why they still do it. Some, not all, were cranky bastards who were shitheads to everybody and could barely fight their way out of a paper bag with a razor sharp ninja sword. I plan on riding a desk for quite awhile in my last few years.
Of course I like to supervise young and excited officers but I hate politics.I surely will have to suck it up and deal with it because it comes with the badge.:gag:
I still love my job and I am looking to moving to the next step in my career.
As long as criminals are stupid, dope is prevalent and people need their asses kicked, I will gladly do my job.

This is why I left CID after 13 years. I realized it wasn't fun anymore; so it was time to move on. We have a patrol officer with 35 years on the streets, and he was SWAT (we dont have full time team) for like 25. I don't know of anyone that would hesitate to answer a call with him. We were talking about retirement again today at training; we both said we're still having fun so see no reason to. I agree with your assessment; I'll know when it is time to go and bow out gracefully.
But it has been a helluva ride.

The next jurisdiction over has a guy that has been on the job since 1966. He's old, but he can still hang. He's still on the SWAT team, which he created many moons ago.
The guy is "go to" on tactics and "non-conventional" law enforcement type stuff. You should see the collection he has of ad-hoc weapons.
Still, 44 years may be too long. His rank now is "Inspector"...the only one in the department.

Update:
Starting detective/corporal school Monday. Promotions should come at the end of July or early August so I am crossing my fingers.
I am high on the list finally and looking forward to trying something new.

Good Luck to ya! I spent 13 years in our Investigations Div and then came back to the streets (ours isn't a promotion). I enjoyed the work, especially crimescene but after 13 yrs I needed a change. I bet you'll do good.

Thanks Hoss.
I want to give the investigative side a try. On the streets I find I can get good info out of suspects. Maybe I can do it in the interview room now and bring it home for a conviction!

Congratulations Feet. It really does seem like my time has flown by. Enjoy your years as best you can wherever you go in the Dept. You'll turn around a couple of times and be one of the old heads. My Dept has a 23 year retirement also and I've got 27. I'm staying long enough to get my 6 years in grade and in less than 2 I'll be gone.
Kick some ass in the next 13.

Gracias mofo.
We need at least two in grade for the retirement pay for that rank.
I already see rookies I used to mess with, being FTO's!
