Showed up for midshift briefing last night (2100 HRS), and the chief was there in uniform. Not to unusual, he sometimes makes briefings to clarify/despell rumors. But tonight he was just getting out & about. He just sat back as SGT gave briefing notes, & of course we talked COMPSTAT since the boss was there. As we broke, Chief asked if anyone had questions of him about anything; then we hit the streets.

Before 2200 the boss called out in traffic, & shortly thereafter for a back up. I don't know what he had, or if he just needed a cite book, but I doubt that. Around 2300 dispatch assigned a disturbance call to the beat primary & back up. Chief advised he was close & 1 of the other units could disregard.

He was out till about midnight, then sent us all an MDC msg telling us to stay safe & keep up the good work. Said he had to get to bed since he had to be back in the office at 0800.

This ain't unusual for him personally. But I can't help but wonder how many other chiefs of simular sized departments (185 authorized) do this on a fairly regular basis as he does.

That's pretty cool I think - still hitting the streets to show the patrol folks he supports them.

Ours doesn't. Can't remember the last briefing I saw him in unless there was a retirement.

Stan is good people. He's been with APD about 15 yrs; quickly climbed the ladder & was just appointed Chief earlier this year. He's real big on communication; even puts out like a newsletter every week or two on issues the department is dealing with internally. I like working for him.

I have met our Chief a few times. He's our second chief in a row from Commiefornia and it shows. He is all smiles, handshakes, and kissing babies but he spends most of his time suspending and firing cops. I heard he rode out before in our rich folks area and I guess he assumes the rest of the city is slow like they were. We used to have some assistant chiefs that HAD to ride out with patrol but its been awhile since I had some brass in my passenger seat.
Congrats on having a cool chief that knows the importance of patrol. I was in a foot pursuit with an assistant chief about 2 years ago. He was the shiznit. Of course he was run out of the department by the Chief and the other commie brass.
