APD Class#49 graduated last night with several firsts. We had 2 minority females, 1 of which is 1/2 of a married couple that completed the academy together. But 1 of the grads was more special to me.

I had the honor of pinning my son's badge on him. The badge I used was his granddad's APD badge from the late 50's. He is the 1st 3rd generation APD officer that we know of.

It was kinda funny; I hadn't told him what I was gonna do, so he was expecting "his" badge. I pulled dad's old badge from my pocket, which shined up pretty good for 50 yrs old, and showed it to him as I stood in front of him. He got a funny look on his face & asked "Is that your dad's?". I told him it was, and that I know he's just as proud as all of us of him and that he's carrying on a family tradition. After I pinned it, I wasn't gonna embarass him with anything more than a handshake. But he reached up with both arms & hugged me.

This hairylegged old redneck almost lost it. If I was smart nuff, I'd post a couple of pictures, but I don't do these computer things real good.

Just a self-serving post, but this daddy's just to proud to keep it to himself.

Well done Broke!
I would love to have the honor of that and I am sure he was touched down to his bones for that. It is something you will never forget.

Get some!

Thanks guys, I thought it was pretty neat. He got interviewed by a couple of the media here. It's just something we've looked forward to cause it is all he has ever wanted to do. The chiefs were all there and knew what was happening; so they had to come look at the badge when it was over. A buddy from the SO got to pin his son's on as well. Just a real special time for all of em. Thanks for lettimg me share it.

It was a heck of a deal for me. He starts his FTO on mids on the other side of the week from me. We'll actually work at the same time Wed night. But he'll be on the northside of town & I work south. Still gonna be pretty cool.

So what are you going to make him call you? By your name, "dad", or "sir"? :nana:

He usually refers to me just like everyone else does; a-hole.

I remember when I was in CID I went to a hospital room to talk to an assault victim and my wife was in there (she's an RN). I was like standing there trying to figger out if I should say "Hi Dear" or what. She handled it cool, said the police need to talk to you now & excused herself. But it was still kinda awkward.
