SAN ANTONIO -- A Texas Department of Public Safety trooper is lucky be alive after he was nearly hit by a vehicle Tuesday morning.
The trooper came up on a minor accident in the northbound lanes of IH-37 near Hackberry around 8:30 a.m. The trooper and a San Antonio Police officer who arrived minutes later were trying to close the right lane of the highway when a driver approaching the accident site lost control of his car. The trooper was forced to jump over the guardrail and off of the bridge to avoid being hit by the vehicle.
A San Antonio Police Department spokesperson said the trooper fell approximately 14 feet to the ground below. The trooper suffered leg and hand injuries. He was taken to the Baptist Hospital Downtown and is said to be in good condition.
The SAPD spokesperson added that getting out of a vehicle on the highway is one of the more dangerous tasks law enforcement officers have to do.
