I was curious about the different uniform requirements of agencies. You frequently see LEOs on "Cops" or similar shows wearing tactical pants with their agency T-shirt and an external tac vest, etc. Around here I only see LEOs wearing the standard button down agency shirt with matching pants, etc. What are the requirements? Do you have to fill a specific role to wear different uniforms? Of course in small towns it is common to see LEOs wearing jeans, boots, and a Stetson.

There is a two word simple answer to this question: DEPARTMENT POLICY.
To expound on that is to say that some agencies are more lax than others. Some are more accepting of duty specific uniforms and some have you on the road in knee high boots and a campaign hat with a suicide strap no matter what uniformed position you fill.
It varies jurisdiction to jurisdiction.

DD78 has it.
We wear 511's. We have embroidered badges/names right now but are in the process of switching back to pin-ons. The duty uniform is just cargo style pants with an open collared shirt. Class A is for court, funerals & such. It consists of pants, no cargo pockets, long sleeved shirt, tie and the pin on badge with all your awards.
The motor officers have the same style uniform, except they have the knee high boots.
Bike patrol, which is only a special event function, have thier special uniforms of polo style shirts & either long pants or shorts.

We have a mix of uniforms too but patrol is predominantly the standard 2 pocket button down shirt with collar and the nut hugger polyester pants. Specialty units get to wear BDU pants and detectives choose formal dress clothes or standard uniform, full duty belt not required for them.
